Peer Influence

One of the continuing questions that I receive concerns the influences that a child receives from their peers. Let's be straight here, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it! At some point in their lives your child will value the thoughts and ideas of the people that they associate with much more than they value your thoughts and ideas. Let's face it, those ideations and influences begin in daycare and progress throughout you child's life. Direct confrontation is a relationship killer! That is not to say that you should sacrifice your values to match the the ideas that peers propose to your child, but I do propose that your child will always "come home" if you are constant and continuous in your message of acceptance and love.

Holidays are stressful times for families. Parents are confronted with holiday giving and the ensuing bills and kids often display behavior that is almost beyond forgiving or understanding. Maintaining a positive parenting outlook and action plan can tax anyone. Here are some rules of the road for this holiday season.

Always think before reacting, if you are reacting to a situation you are not in control, hesitate, count to ten and move forward with your actions.

Take this holiday vacation opportunity to spend some good time with the kids. Time that is devoted solely to a child shows their importance to you because your time is one of your most precious commodities.

Think about your holiday traditions and rituals, as children age the things that the family does together every year becomes significant in the way that they will recall holidays and create the rituals and traditions for their families.
